The secondary structure of a nucleic acid refers to the base pairing bonds of the bases of nucleotides with each other. In single-stranded RNA, base pairing does not necessarily occur at every position, whereas every base from one strand of a double-stranded DNA molecule bonds with its complement in the opposing strand, which makes the molecule take the shape of a long ladder or staircase.
