Diploid cell

A cell is diploid if its autosomes can be divided into pairs of homologous chromosomes. Most animals, including humans, have somatic cells that are diploid.

For example, see below for a human karyotype. The first 22 of the 23 chromosome pairs shown are all autosomes. The remaining two chromosomes are allosomes (sex chromosomes).
