Taxon

A taxon is a general term used for a collection of modern-day organisms (which may be populations, subspecies, species, families, phyla, etc.) that are considered to share the same ancestor and grouped together into a single unit in order to construct a phylogeny.

Because taxa do not generally correspond to extinct species, they are assigned to the leaves of any tree used to model a phylogeny.
