Plasmid

A molecule of DNA that exists and replicates separately from chromosomal DNA but may become integrated into chromosomal DNA, commonly appearing in bacteria. Even though plasmids are independent of the genome, plasmids can be integrated into or excised from a genome.

Plasmids are also commonly used as vectors in genetic engineering.
