Double helix

The double helix is a shape consisting of two chains twisted together, which was proposed by Watson and Crick as the tertiary structure of DNA in 1953 (shown below).

The double helix arises because the base-pairing bonds that determine DNA's secondary structure introduce a rotational element into the double-stranded molecule, which makes a complete turn about every 10.5 nucleotides.
