A character dividing $n$ taxa into two disjoint groups may be represented in array notation by an array $A$ for which we set $A[i] = 1$ if the $i$-th taxon possesses the character and $A[i] = 0$ otherwise. Once we have a collection of characters in array notation, we can assemble them into a matrix called a character table.
